Connecting Essay 5

This is a photograph by Ben Gold, in this image he has photographed the rear view mirror as the main aspect of the image, so that the viewer can view whats going on behind the car. The camera isn't so close to the mirror therefore you can still see the setting that is in front of the car. The image is in colour and seems really sunny and happy. There is no model or person within the photo its all just car parts and location.
This is a photograph that I took to portray a journey. I have got a close up shot on the side mirror in my car showing the scenery behind. The frame around the mirror is out of focus which allows the viewer to focus their attention on the inside of the photo. I have included a road and cars diving to indicate a journey. I didn't edit the photo in black and white however the setting that my car was parked in didn't have much colour itself which makes it appear as if the image has been changed to black and white. I haven't included any people within my images on purpose anyone that is in the shot were just walking by at the time.

I used Ben Gold as an influence when planning this shoot therefore there are similarities between his work and my photo. For example we have both used a mirror to show whats happening behind the car at that point in time. My photo is a close up however whereas Golds mirror is only in the centre of the photo. We both had included and left that natural colour within the photos, Ben Golds just looks more vibrant due to the sunshine and surroundings. A road can also be seen within both of our images, this is the aspect of both photos that link to travelling and a journey.

Connecting Essay 4

This is a photograph by William Eggleston he's used a sign to indicate the journey within this image, he's placed it close to the centre of the photo to indicate that its the main focus of the photo. He's famously known for his influence of colour within his photographs, this can be seen in this photo as it gives a high saturation feel to the photos. A road can be seen on the right hand side which is another indication of journey for this photo.

This is my own image that I have taken as a part of my journey photography series. I decided to take the photo with the signs as the main focus this was because they indicate direction and are often used by people who are on a journey. The whole setting was really lovely and I wanted to capture the road within the image also. Its been edited into a black and white format, I decided to do this because even though the colours in the original photo looked amazing I wanted the photo to be looked at and studied which I felt would be done if it was in black and white.

I actually had taken inspiration from Egglestons photo when photographing this shot myself. Therefore there are some key similarities between the two images. Firstly they both have signs as the main feature of the photo, as well as this the whole setting of the photo is very similar with the road on the right hand side of the image. The one key difference between both photos is the presence of colour, Eggleston has included it within his images whereas I decided to use black and white.

Connecting Essay 3

This a photograph by the photographer Yuval Yairi, he has captured the theme of journey within the image by imprinting a photo of a childhood place onto a suitcase. This photo links to journey on more than one platform. He shows a journey from the place on the suitcase to the setting that he is photographing in no. Another way is through the use of a suitcase as it is an object that is immediately connected with travelling and journey taking. He has places the suitcase in the centre of the image, it nearly inhabits the whole space however leaves some room for the viewer to see where he is photographing, which in this case is a field. He has used colour within the image that makes me think that he wants to show the overall image in a happy light.
This is a multiple imagery photograph that I have taken as a part of my own journey photography series. The photo shows four suitcases that hold different contents. Each suitcase indicates a different journey through the props. I places the suitcases within the centre of each shot so that the viewers eye will be focused on looking inside, I used a white background as well for this purpose. The photos I edited in colour because I felt that with this shoot it should convey a happiness, due to the fact that theres a possibility of travelling to contrasting locations.

The similarities between the two photos can be seen, I do feel that there aren't that many however the few similarities that there are can obviously be seen. Firstly the use of colour within both photos creates the same feeling and lets the viewer know that they should feel happy when looking at both photos. Another thing in common is the use of a suitcase as the main object and an indication of where they will be travelling to or from. Yairi uses photo printed on the suitcase to show this whereas I have used props that link to specific locations and weathers. I feel that the link to journey can be seen as the main theme within both photos and the strong similarities between the two photos.

Connecting Essay 2

This is a photograph by Don McCullin which is similar to the other images that he has photographed. This photograph is linked to my theme of the journey because paths and roads are widely linked to travelling, for example the say "road most travelled". McCullin has used a wide and somewhat empty setting that shows the main focus of the dirt road. The road starts off practically in the centre of the image and then slightly curves as it moves up to the centre of the photo and disappears. He has edited the photo so that there is no colour which gives it a sinister feel. The photo has been split into two sections one that shows the fields and the path/road and the other showing the sky. This gives the photo some levels and helps towards the depth of the photo also because of how the path fades off the closer it moves towards the sky section.

This is my own photograph that I shot as a part of my journey photography series. I have photographed a path that leads off, retracting in size the further away it gets until its gone. Around the path is very few trees that still allow the sky to be seen and anything that may be behind them. I decided to use an angle that included the entire width of the path at the bottom so that the retraction of size could be seen more clearly. The editing decisions with this photo meant that the saturation was reduced so much that the photo almost looks as though it has none, however a small amount of green can be seen within the grass. The feel that the image conveys is scary and depressing which I feel was created through the use of setting and the lack of bright, happy colours.

There are a few similarities between the two photos for example the fact that the main focus of each of the images is a path/road. Another similarity is the genre style behind both images, they both make the viewer feel scared and wary. There is a slight difference within the use of colouring within the two photographs as McCullins is completely in black and white where as mine uses a small amount of colour that has been somewhat unsaturated.
I feel that Mcullin was a great influence on my own work, which has help it become something that I am proud of and that I feel is a good representation of journey.

Connecting essay 1

This is a photograph by Lee Friedlander from his 'America by Car' shoot where he travels around america shooting photographs from his car window. This photograph and shoot shows a journey specifically because he is using a car, which is a means of transportation as a prop in different locations. Looking at all of his work within this project the theme of journey is clear and done in a uniquely interesting way as I have not seen this style in any other photographers work that links to journeys. He uses black and white throughout all of his photos which doesn't allow any other interpretation for the photos other than journey. The areas of the car that have been included in each photograph are large however do not take focus away from the location, as this is a large part of the images.

This is my own work, which has been based around Lee Friedlanders photographs. I have used black and white when editing my images, the reason I had done this was because it creates different levels in the image, creating the sense that outside the car was lighter than within. This also allows the viewer to focus on different areas of the photo, not just one main aspect. I have shot my photographs including different parts of my car for example I used the steering wheel, seats, mirrors and frame work of my car, the reason for this was because it allowed me to view the surrounding area in different lights, which creates a completely different scene in each photo. Shadowing was something I encouraged within my photos as I likes the darkness that it included especially around the bottom of the images.

There are many similarities between my shoot and Lee Friedlanders work due to the fact that I had based my shoot around that. Similarities include the use of the car within the shot to imply that a journey is being taken in a car, I however used different parts of my car where as Friedlander mainly focused on the steering wheel and side mirror. We've also both travelled to different locations to imply that a journey is being taken. A little bit of shadowing can be seen in Friedlanders images however I don't think that this was done intentionally, whereas in my images that was an aspect that I really tried to include so that a larger contrast could bee seen between my images. The use of black and white can be seen in both our photos also.
I love Lee Friedlanders work and have tried to influence him within this shoot as much as I could. I am extremely happy with how my photographs have turned out and I think that they show journey in a clear and alluring way.
